CONCEPT

After our uncle Zach and his wife showed us how to play Dungeons and Dragons, we had the idea of making our own version, with a couple of new ideas from other board games like Seven Wonders and Risk. We wanted it to be more structured than D&D, but keep the same combat style, emphasis on characters, and the choose-your-own-adventure type gameplay.

PRODUCTION

After we sketched out several ideas on paper and created vast moodboards with Midjourney AI, I opened Photoshop and began designing the user interface of the game. My brother, Jon, drew on Procreate the thumbnails, symbols, and icons that Midjourney wasn't able to make.

The hardest part of the design was making sure it served the gameplay. Good UX became essential, as our ideas were huge enough that we risked players getting confused in the many rules.

At the same time, our other siblings helped handle printing and cutting the cardstock. 100% of our physical production was handled by our home printer and laminator.

RESULT

Two years and hundreds and hundreds of card tests later, we finished V3 of the game. It consists of three Missions—basically battles staged in various places around our four worlds. Each time a Mission is completed, you get Spirit Points and use them to level up your Hero's abilities. And whenever you drop an enemy during the battle, you can buy Gear that will increase your Hero's base stats and special attributes.

Unlike a lot of the other games we've played, in Avalask: Missions, you work together as a team to combat independently controlled enemies. If you win all three Missions, you get to defeat the final boss, which unlocks them to play as a Hero later. All in all, the game is supposed to be an adventurous way to explore different worlds, get to know the different Heroes, and enjoy the vast collection of art.

We're not finished with the game yet; oh no. We already have plans for V4, an even better and more beautiful version!
